Citizens, elected officials, visitors and Veterans gathered at Kaufman County Veterans Memorial Park on Monday, May 25 for the Memorial Day celebration ceremony. Judge Joseph Russell delivered a speech to honor the fallen military service members.

Scurry alum begins medical residency

Jacob McLean, a 2016 Scurry-Rosser High School graduate, recently started his medical residency at one of the top children’s hospitals in the nation. McLean began attending Scurry-Rosser ISD in second grade, where his mother, Jennifer McLean, was an elementary school teacher, and remained there until graduating from Scurry-Rosser High School in 2016.

Man who killed Terrell officer receives life sentence

Body
The man responsible for the death of Terrell Police Officer Jacob Candanoza pled guilty to his murder and was sentenced on Wednesday, May 27. Darrian Johnson was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole by a Kaufman County Judge shortly after appearing in court and pleading guilty.

Lone Star CASA welcomes new volunteers

Lone Star CASA proudly welcomed new volunteers during two swearing in ceremonies held at the Rockwall County Courthouse in March and April. The Honorable Judge Brett Hall officially administered the oath to the newest CASA Volunteers who are now prepared to advocate for children who have experienced abuse and neglect in Kaufman and Rockwall Counties. During the March ceremony, five CASA Volunteers and one Helping Heart were sworn in. In the second ceremony in April, eight CASA Volunteers and two staff members were sworn in. Helping Hearts are family members of CASA Volunteers who complete training to provide additional support throughout a volunteer’s advocacy journey.

Kaufman County notes Elder Abuse Awareness in June

May 26, Kaufman County Commissioners’ Court proclaimed June as Elder Abuse Awareness Month. “Y’all have been so gracious every year to proclaim June as Elder Abuse Awareness Month in Kaufman County, and we appreciate it,” Waxahachie- based Department of Family Protective Services Community Engagement Specialist Sue Stalder said.

Kaufman County Judge Jakie Allen, along with the Kaufman County Commissioners Court, signed a proclamation recognizing May 11–16 as National Salvation Army Week in Kaufman County. The proclamation honors the long-standing service and dedication of The Salvation Army and its commitment to helping individuals and families throughout Kaufman County and surrounding communities.

Kaufman County OKs report regarding ADA plan

Staff Reports Kaufman County Commissioners’ Court voted May 10 to approve a self-evaluation and transition report in regards to the federal Americans with Disabilities Act. Kaufman County’s Title VI coordinator, Shelley Tackett, explained to the court that the self-evaluation plan “basically means the county’s program services, facilities and websites complies with identifying barriers and making adjustments as needed.

Kemp ISD Teachers of the Year

Kemp ISD announced their District and Campus Teachers of the Year during their board meeting on Monday, May 18. For Kemp Primary School, Cassandra Henderson was named the Campus Teacher of the Year.
