Kaufman County notes Elder Abuse Awareness in June

May 26, Kaufman County Commissioners’ Court proclaimed June as Elder Abuse Awareness Month. “Y’all have been so gracious every year to proclaim June as Elder Abuse Awareness Month in Kaufman County, and we appreciate it,” Waxahachie- based Department of Family Protective Services Community Engagement Specialist Sue Stalder said.

There’s something very special about river fishing. I grew up a few miles from the Red River in Red River County and have fond memories of bank fishing along the river. I remember my dad telling me there was a dam many miles upstream that impounded a huge body of water situated along the Texas/ Oklahoma border called Lake Texoma. I was well into my twenties before I discovered Texoma and sampled the great striper fishing there.

Lone Star CASA welcomes new volunteers

Lone Star CASA proudly welcomed new volunteers during two swearing in ceremonies held at the Rockwall County Courthouse in March and April. The Honorable Judge Brett Hall officially administered the oath to the newest CASA Volunteers who are now prepared to advocate for children who have experienced abuse and neglect in Kaufman and Rockwall Counties. During the March ceremony, five CASA Volunteers and one Helping Heart were sworn in. In the second ceremony in April, eight CASA Volunteers and two staff members were sworn in. Helping Hearts are family members of CASA Volunteers who complete training to provide additional support throughout a volunteer’s advocacy journey.

Man who killed Terrell officer receives life sentence

The man responsible for the death of Terrell Police Officer Jacob Candanoza pled guilty to his murder and was sentenced on Wednesday, May 27. Darrian Johnson was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole by a Kaufman County Judge shortly after appearing in court and pleading guilty.
