news@kaufmanherald.com The history of Memorial Day is one that is steeped in honor, sacrifice and commitment to military service and service to country. The holiday recognizes those that made the ultimate sacrifice and laid down their lives to protect their country’s citizens.

More than 500 residents and visitors gathered at the Kaufman County Fair Grounds this past Saturday for the semi-annual Kaufman County Homestead Day and National Zebu Cattle Club Show. The event featured over 40 vendors, exhibitors, nonprofits and community partners celebrating agriculture, homesteading and rural traditions through educational demonstrations, livestock exhibits, shopping and family-friendly activities.

Kaufman County Grand Jury returned 61 indictments May 15. Indictment information obtained from the District Clerk’s office does not include ages or addresses of defendants.

The No. 1 British Flying Training School Museum welcomed veterans, families, history enthusiasts, and visitors from across the region on Saturday, May 9th for a memorable Victory in Europe Celebration honoring the courage, sacrifi ce, and victory of the World War II generation.

Three people were injured in a plane crash in Forney in the early morning hours of Saturday, May 16. Texas Highway Patrol responded to a single-engine plane crash in a field on the southwest corner of Helms Trail and Akron Way in the city limits of Forney according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Kaufman County recently hosted a successful Youth Mental Health and Juvenile Justice Sequential Intercept Model (SIM) Mapping Workshop, bringing together more than 15 organizations and community partners committed to improving outcomes for youth and families across the county.

The Center in Kaufman is forming community councils, including the Homeless Community Council. The key goal is to identify efficient ways to assist people experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity.

The Historic Kaufman County Poor Farm was filled with community spirit, education and excitement on Saturday, May 9 as residents gathered to enjoy the Kaufman County Farmers Market and celebrate the grand opening of the new Pollinator Garden.
