After a pre-game Homecoming performance by the Kaufman High School Marching Lions, the Lion football team went in search of its first win of the season for the 2019 Homecoming game.
Unfortunately, the team is still searching.
The first drive of the game against Gainesville was one of the best in the first half for the Lions as Darius McGee ran the ball for a series of short gains, joined by Raikyviun Shaw. With fourth down and four to go, the Lions went for it, but didn’t gain enough yards for the first down.
Gainesville then got the ball, made two carries, then ran in for a touchdown with seven minutes left in the first quarter, then scored another TD four minutes later.
Starting the second quarter, Kaufman’s offense again tried a series of short runs, primarily up the middle. But when Greenville got the ball back, they made a run from the 42-yard line to the 18, then scored another touchdown. A field goal at the end of the half put Greenville ahead 24-0.
At halftime, Yoana Martinez was crowned Homecoming queen.
In the second half, both Kaufman’s offense and defense made progress as the Lions scored their first touchdown of the night, and they also didn’t allow any more scoring from Greenville.
The Lions are hoping to recuperate from some injuries during their bye week on Oct. 4, then journey to North Forney on Oct. 11 for a district away game.
