The 2023 Kaufman Lions baseball team started their new season at a tournament which was hosted by Royse City High School on Feb. 23 through Feb. 25.
Overall, the team went 3-2 in the tournament. The results of the games that the team played in the tournament are as follows:
Dallas Hillcrest 12 Kaufman 3.
Kaufman 4 Richardson High School 0.
Mesquite Poteet 5 Kaufman 0.
In the Royse City game, Kaufman scored one run in the first inning and three in the seventh frame to win.
Top hitters for Kaufman in this game were Raul Garcia (one hit and one RBI) and Levi Gardner (one hit and one RBI).
On the mound, in this game, a terrific trio of pitchers for Kaufman did some excellent work. For the record, Thomas Stevens, Josh Skellenger, and Kennedy Forsyth combined to pitch seven full innings while surrendering two runs on four hits with five strikeouts and two walks.
In the loss to Dallas Hillcrest, Kaufman got RBI hits from Garcia, Issac Leija, and Daniel De Los Rios.
Against Richardson High School, the Kaufman pitching duo of Garcia and Skellenger teamed up to throw a shutout while surrendering just three hits with seven strikeouts and four walks.
Kaufman’s offense in this game was led by Anthony De La Fuente (two hits and two RBIs), and Isaiah Leija (one hit and two RBIs).
In the Sunnyvale game, Kaufman scored one run in the first inning one in the third, two in the fourth, and three in the fifth to seal the victory.
Key hitters for Kaufman in this game were Cody Dickinson (one hit and one RBI), Gardner (one RBI), Roberto Ybarra (one RBI), and Forsyth (two hits and one RBI).
On the mound for Kaufman, Abraham Ramos worked five full innings while surrendering just one run on three hits with six strikeouts and two walks.
In their final game of the tournament Kaufman lost to Mesquite Poteet by a count of 5-0.
Some offensive highlights in this game for Kaufman were provided by Garcia (one hit), and Gardner (two hits).
After this tournament, Kaufman has a 3-2 overall record.
