The Kaufman Lions tennis team is headed to the regional tournament after victories in the area and regional quarterfinal rounds on Saturday and Monday.
Kaufman will play in the regional semifinal match against the winner of Frisco Wakeland and Frisco Lebanon Trail on Thursday, Oct. 25 at 2:30 p.m. at Allen High School.
Kaufman defeated Ennis in the area match Saturday at Corsicana indoor facility.
Starting with line one and two doubles, the teams battled for over two hours and eventually split with the score of 2-2.
With line threes and mixed doubles left, momentum in singles would be decided by these final three matches.
Kaufman’s threes (Braedon Goldring/Eduardo Garcia and Emily James/Makayla Mays) pulled out wins in straight sets.
With Whitehouse placing their strength in mixed doubles, Joseph Good and Kelcey Emerson of Kaufman stunned their opponents. After being down in the super tiebreaker, they battled back and won the match, giving Kaufman a 5-2 lead after doubles play.
In singles play, Whitehouse refused to give in. Every match remained close throughout with several going into three setters.
Mariah Gonzalez and Yadira Rodriguez helped shift the momentum in Kaufman’s favor by giving the team two quick wins.
Whitehouse rallied with two wins at line three and four in boys singles, making the score 7-4.
Finally, Kaufman’s Michael Sij, Brandon Statum, Chloe DuBose, and Emily Rodriguez finished their matches all within minutes of each other and clinching the overall win for the team.
Other singles’ winners included Jackie Rodriguez, Eduardo Garcia, and Stephen Sij.

Kaufman returned to Corsicana Monday to defeat Lindale.
Starting with doubles play, both teams battled hard to take the momentum and lead going into singles.
After several third set super tiebreakers, Kaufman pulled ahead with a 5-2 lead.
On the boys’ side, Brandon Statum/Humberto Gutierrez and Braedon Goldring/Eduardo Garcia pulled out huge wins at line two and three.
Emily Rodriguez/Yadira Rodriguez and Makayla Mays/Emily James also won at line two and three on the girls’ side
Kaufman’s mixed doubles team, Joseph Good/Kelcey Emerson, won in straight sets.
In singles play, Kaufman continued the charge with a quick win coming from Chloe DuBose, making the score 6-2
Lindale rallied, getting two wins on the boys’ side at lines one and three.
Finally, the Lions rattled off four more wins, coming from Stephen Sij, Humberto Gutierrez, Emily James and Emily Rodriguez.
