The Kaufman High School varsity basketball squads have enjoyed a strong start to the season, stringing together multiple wins as they begin pre-district pay.
The varsity girls kicked off their season on Nov. 12 with a runaway 51-19 win over Quinlan-Ford. Next, the team matched up with the Eustace Bulldogs in a game that started out very competitive. The Lions finished the first quarter up by one 13-12, but in a low-scoring second quarter the Bulldogs tied it up heading into halftime with both teams locked at 17-17. The Lions ran away with it in the third, though, outscoring the Bulldogs by double digits 12-2. The Bulldogs edged out the Lions by a single point 19-18 in a high-scoring final quarter, but it was nowhere near enough to mount a comeback from their third quarter deficit, giving the Lions their second win of the season 47-38.
However, the Lions met their match against Athens, who beat them 74-50 on Nov. 19 to hand the Lions their first lost of the season.
Thanks to their sizable division, the Lions only have three more games before beginning district play against Terrell on Dec. 17. Their next game will be an away game against South Garland on Dec. 3.
The boys squad also got their season off to a good start with a successful game against John Tyler. The Lions outscored John Tyler in every quarter except the tied fourth, leading their opponents 16-10 in the first, 26-20 in the second, and 16-13 in the third before going 11-11 in the fourth, giving them a 69-54 win.
Jamar McCray was the lead scorer for the Lions with 18 points, followed by Bennie Brown with 14, Joseph McCray with 10, Daylong Dickerson and Cane White with 9, Charleston Miller with 4 and Jaedyn Hill with 3.
The boys team will travel to South Garland with the girls for their next game on Dec. 3.
