Kaufman’s run in the state team tennis playoffs came to an end at the regional tournament on Thursday.
The Lions met Frisco Lebanon Trail and fell 10-1.
“Thursday brought an end to an awesome season that concluded at the regional semifinal match against Frisco Lebanon Trail,” said Coach Michael Lott.
After several site changes due to weather, the teams played at Coppell High School.
Starting with doubles play, the Lions won at line three girls doubles (Emily James/Makayla Mays).
However, Lebanon Trail answered by winning three tight matches with two of them being lost in tiebreakers in the third set.
Going into singles, the Lions faced an uphill battle being down 6-1. With momentum in Lebanon Trail’s favor, they solidified the win by quickly rattling off four matches in singles.
Lebanon Trail then faced Dallas Highland Park in the regional finals on Friday, with Highland Park taking a 10-0 win and advancing to this week’s state tournament in College Station.
They were to face A&M Consolidated on Wednesday morning.
Highland Park is the two-time defending state champion in Class 5A. This is Kaufman’s first year to compete in 5A.
“With Kaufman moving into class 5A this year, the tennis teams exceeded expectations and has set the bar high for future teams,” Lott said.
