The jump up to Class 5A didn’t stop the Kaufman cross country team from making it to the state meet and performing well.

The boys team placed sixth Saturday in Round Rock, while Christian Rivera placed 10th to make the all-state team.

Rivera shaved 37 seconds off his time from last year, when he placed second in Class 4A.

His 15:21 helped the Lions to have their best team average of the season at 16:16 and best in school history.

“We are extremely proud of the way the boys competed against the best 16 teams in class 5A,” Coach Denver Stone said. “Thank you to everyone who has supported the cross country teams all season long.”

Spencer Keith bettered his time from 2017 by 36 seconds and placed 40th in 16:07.

Jeb Williamson, in his first state meet, ran a 16:16, good for 50th.

Edwin Olvera shaved 37 seconds off his time from a year ago and came in 73rd in 16:35.

Marshall Pate ran a 16:59 for 106th place and took 10 seconds off last year’s time.

Carlos Sanchez ran 17:54 and placed 131st and Adan Gutierrez was 138th and ran an 18:20.

There were 16 teams and 150 runners in the meet.

El Paso Eastwood won with 62 points followed by Austin Johnson and Lucas Lovejoy.

Graydon Morris of Aledo was the winner in 15:03.98. Places two through 10 were separated by just 13 seconds.
