Dear Editor,

Over 90 percent of Americans want to age in their own homes and communities and home health care is far more affordable than alternatives like nursing homes and hospitalization. Despite this, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services is planning to reduce payments to Medicare home health providers by over eight percent, leading to a cut of almost $1.3 billion in home health spending in 2020 alone! These cuts are based on untested assumptions about how providers will behave, and the cuts take place before there is any evidence of a change in behavior.

“Your Health Team” has been providing quality care since 2004 to patients and their families that literally they cannot live without. These spending cuts will endanger access to care for millions of Americans who need and deserve the best quality health care delivered to them in their homes by passionate and skilled medical professionals like myself and my colleagues.

Fortunately, bipartisan legislation in both houses of Congress – the Home Health Payment Innovation Act – will prohibit any payment changes based on unproven assumptions and phase in any payment adjustments over two percent, so home health providers and their patients are not negatively affected by sudden and sharp cuts. The legislation would also allow for the “confined to the home” requirement to be waived for some patients when it is in the best interests of that patient.

Harmful health care spending cuts will go into effect if Congress does not pass the Home Health Payment Innovation Act. The bill has attracted plenty of bipartisan support, but it needs more help from the public to become law. Every person who cares about access to quality home health care should contact their Senators and Representatives and ask them to sponsor the Home Health Payment Innovation Act before the cuts take place.

“Your Health Team” and the National Association for Home Care & Hospice are fighting the spending cuts and all of us can join the fight by going to and with a few clicks tell our elected representatives to support legislation to stop the harmful spending cuts.  Let’s do it to protect our families, our neighbors, our friends, and the most vulnerable among us!
