When discussing action plans in November, the board of trustees read a letter of resignation from Casey Becker. In his letter, Becker outlined that he will need to resign due to health conditions. The board unanimously voted to accept the motion and voted to discuss options for potentially filling the vacancy at a later date. KISD was supportive of Becker’s decision, and attendees were dressed in unison, wearing t-shirts to support the Becker family.
Now, as of Dec. 12, the board has elected Casey Townsend, Broker at Elsie Halbert Real Estate, to fill the vacant position on the board. Townsend was elected in a unanimous vote and will be seated at the next board meeting.
Other discussion in this month’s meeting included two public hearings discussing the results of the Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas and the ESSER III Use of Funds Plan and the Safe Return to In-Person Instruction and Continuity of Services Plan.
In a rating that includes 20 indicators for financial practices, Kaufman ISD had perfect scores for all but one category which was based on property value and is not fully reliant on personal financial decisions. This perfect scoring placed Kaufman in a superior rating for financial integrity for the 20th consecutive year in a row. Kaufman ISD has over 200 days of funds reserved in the case of funding losses and plans to go for another superior rating for the 2022-2023 school year.
The ESSER III Use of Funds Plan outlines how the school will budget state funding for years to come. ESSER III addresses the needs of the 2023-2024 school year. The largest focus for spending lies in Chromebook purchasing for students. Chromebooks have roughly five years of activity before they need to be updated and replaced. There is currently $1.2 million budgeted for future Chromebook purchases, including Chromebooks for the upcoming high school class. ESSER III also outlines budgeting for smart boards in the elementary level, after-school program funding, and money to potentially bring in outside counselors for emotional and social learning.
