UPDATE:
Thursday morning's shooting occurred at the home of Robert Lee Hartfield, 87, of Terrell, according to Terrell Police Department Capt. A.D. Sansom.
Sansom said Hartfield, who was not arrested, cooperated fully with police. Hartfield said he shot 52-year-old Cameron Villa of Dallas one time in order to defend himself, as well as his live-in adult niece, who has been in a long and
violent relationship with Villa, according to family members.
Sansom said Villa was allowed into the residence Thursday morning and began beating the niece, eventually also attacking the elderly Hartfield
and the niece alternately. Villa was shot once in the back with a small caliber pistol.
Terrell police investigators investigated the scene for several hours and interviewed the parties and witnesses.
Sansom said investigators said the facts and evidence reported and
discovered thus far are consistent with Hartfield's statement, as well as that of the niece.
No other parties were at the residence at the time of the shooting. A number of evidentiary items were collected, including the pistol, and police will be awaiting autopsy and lab reports.
This case could be filed with the Kaufman County Grand Jury within a couple of months as a referral, according to Sansom.
Original story:
A Dallas man has died after being shot at 204 S. Hattie St. in Terrell on Thursday morning.
The man, who was 52 years old, is not being identified at this time pending notification of next of kin, according to Terrell Police Department Capt. A.D. Sansom.
Officers had been at the Hattie Street address just after midnight, according to Sansom, after receiving a call about a disturbance.
When police arrived, the man had left and could not be found.
Then, at 5:13 a.m., officers went back to the home after receiving a report of someone being shot and found the same man sought earlier by police on the home’s small porch.
He was treated for his injures and quickly transported by CareFlite ambulance to Lake Pointe Emergency Services in Forney, according to Sansom.
“Just before 7 a.m., the 52-year-old Dallas male succumbed to these injuries,” Sansom said. “An 87-year-old Terrell resident reportedly shot the subject during the disturbance at his home.
“The cause for the disturbance and the reason for the subject’s presence remain under investigation,” he said. “Criminal investigators and forensic personnel are expected to remain on the scene for quite some time.
“The shooter has been identified is cooperating fully with police and no arrests have been made at this time,” Sansom said.
