A fund to help crime victims and witnesses while they work with the district attorney’s office preparing cases was approved Tuesday by the Commissioners Court.
Crime victims and witnesses sometimes spend several days with the attorney’s office while they prepare evidence and testimony for trials, Assistant District Attorney Debbie Bonner told the court. The fund will help the district attorney provide lunch, travel money and sometimes “even diapers” during the preparation time.
“People can’t afford this,” County Judge Jakie Allen said.
Jury members will be asked to donate their $6 a day jury pay to help cover these expenses. The donations are voluntary, Bonner said.
There is a statewide Compensation Fund, but it is controlled by the state.
There is already a list of charities for juror donations and the victims fund will be added.
“It doesn’t add up to a lot of money, but it helps,” Allen said.
During a discussion about a contract with Poetry, Precinct 3 Commissioner Terry Barber explained how road and bridge districts aid incorporated towns with street repairs.
The county districts don’t provide free repairs, but contract with the cities, he said. The cities request work and pay the district the actual cost of the repair.
The county does repair county roads in unincorporated areas.
“If I did Poetry’s road for free, I’d have to do everybody’s, and we can’t do that,” Barber said.
