The Kaufman Lions football team won their 2022 Homecoming game over the Sunnyvale Raiders by a count of 21-7 on Sept. 23 at Kaufman High School.
With this victory, Kaufman improves to 4-1 overall on the season. Sunnyvale falls to 2-3. This was a much-anticipated game between two Dallas Morning News Class 4A area ranked teams.
Kaufman’s senior running back Braxton Garmon had a tremendous game against Sunnyvale as he carried the football 31 times for 212 yards and three touchdowns. He definitely carried the offensive load for the Lions in this game. Also, in this game, Kaufman’s offensive line did a great job of blocking for Garmon.
Defensively, Kaufman caused four big turnovers against Sunnyvale. The Lions collected three interceptions and one fumble recovery. The interceptions were made by Dalys Chandler, Kylevon Morrow, and Angel Ramirez while the fumble recovery was pounced on by Pate Bowers.
Late in the first half, Sunnyvale put together a nice drive and it was capped off with a touchdown pass. So, the Raiders had a 7-0 lead at the five-minute mark of the second quarter.
However, Kaufman answered back with 52-yard touchdown drive to tie the game at 7-all. The drive was completed by Garmon via a two-yard scoring run at the 1:58 mark of the second quarter.
At halftime, Kaufman and Sunnyvale were tied at 7-all.
After a punt by Sunnyvale in the early stages of the third quarter, Kaufman began a long touchdown drive which was finished off in style by Garmon on a 36-yard scoring run at the 7:03 mark of the third quarter. So, now Kaufman was in front by a count of 14-7.
After Morrow’s interception in the fourth quarter, Kaufman started one final touchdown drive that covered 51 yards. Garmon did the scoring honors with a 14-yard run.
Defensive standouts for Kaufman in this game were as follows:

Will Bowers: three tackles and one quarterback pressure.
Morrow: six tackles, one interception, and one pass break up.
Chandler: six tackles, one interception, and one pass break up.
Jeremy Elliot: four tackles.
Isaiah Leija: six tackles and one quarterback pressure.
Issac Leija: four quarterback pressures.
Kaleb Lewis: eight tackles and one quarterback pressure.
Jordan Nalls: three tackles and one quarterback pressure.
Julian Prox: three tackles.
Ramirez: two tackles and one interception.
Eddie Reyes: one tackle and two quarterback pressures.
The Kaufman Lions football team will next play the Paris Wildcats on Oct. 7. This game is set for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff at Kaufman High School. This game will be the district opener for both teams.
