Washington Street Liquor and Cigars wants to be the neighborhood liquor store where the staff knows your favorite drink, or can recommend something for a special occasion.

The shop also is home to Kaufman’s only humidor, keeping cigars at a cool 72 degrees at the proper humidity. Owner Wade Grubbs said he has a small but growing clientele for the cigar business, which features a selection of more than 700 cigars. Like his liquor business, if there’s something a customer wants that he doesn’t have in stock, he’s glad to make a special order. Having the humidor and selection of cigars saves clients the expense of having to drive to Terrell or Dallas for a good cigar, he added.

Founded in 2008, Grubbs purchased the business in 2014 and recently joined the Kaufman Chamber of Commerce.

“We try to provide consistently good customer service and help our customers find what they’re looking for,” he said, adding that he and his three employees appreciate getting to know their clientele. After working in banking for 12 years, Grubbs said he enjoys the challenge and satisfaction of running a small business.

He has an affinity for single-malt scotch and can make recommendations to customers based on what kinds of scotch they like or don’t like.  There also is a large selection of bourbon, whiskey, vodka, gin, mixers, liquors, cigars, schnapps, liqueurs, wine, beer, tobacco, loose leaf tobacco, cigarettes, cold beer, bottled mixed drinks, mixers and soda.

Washington Street Liquors and Cigars is located at 1606 S. Washington St. and is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and closed on Sunday. Drive-through service is available, and the shop can be reached at (972) 932-1000.
