The Kaufman Lions varsity baseball team split District 14-4A games vs. Mabank and Wills Point on April 11 and April 14. Mabank defeated Kaufman by a count of 6-5. But, Kaufman bounced back and defeated Wills Point by a count of 13-1. These games were played at Mabank High School and Wills Point High School.
Then, on April 15 at Sunnyvale High School, Sunnyvale defeated Kaufman by a count of 3-2 in a non-district game.
After these results, Kaufman’s record stands at 12-14 overall and 6-3 in District 14-4A play.
In the Mabank game, the Panthers took a 1-0 lead on a RBI groundout in the bottom of the third inning. But, Kaufman answered back with three runs in the top of the fourth inning to jump in front by a count of 3-1. The runs were scored via a steal of home by Isaiah Leija, a Mabank error, and a RBI infield single by Issac Leija.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Mabank tied the game at 3-all thanks to two RBI bases loaded walks.
In the top of the fifth inning, Kaufman regained the lead at 4-3 via a RBI infield single by Jordan Nalls.
Mabank tied the game again at 4-all in the bottom of the fifth inning due to a passed ball by Kaufman.
The Lions took a 5-4 lead in the top of the sixth inning on a RBI single to left field by Anthony De La Fuente.
Then, in the bottom of the sixth inning, Mabank evened the game again at 5-all on a RBI double.
Then in the bottom of the seventh and final inning, the Panthers won the game on a walk off RBI double.
Against Wills Point, Kaufman scored three runs in the first inning, one in the second, two in the third, three in the fourth, one in the sixth, and three in the seventh on their way to victory.
Top hitters in this game for Kaufman were Isaiah Leija (two hits and two RBIs), Nalls (one hit and one RBI), Levi Gardner (three hits and two RBIs), De La Fuente (one hit), and Daniel De Los Rios (two hits and four RBIs).
On the mound, Raul Garcia was the winning pitcher for Kaufman as he worked six full innings while surrendering one run on six hits with 11 strikeouts and zero walks.
In the Sunnyvale game, Kaufman took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a two-RBI double to left field by Hunter Kilpatrick.
However, Sunnyvale would score single runs in the second, sixth, and seventh innings to win this game. The runs came home via a RBI single, a solo homer, and a RBI triple.
