Kaufman High School senior Maiya Rodriguez improved her totals by 20 pounds to place sixth at the state championships of the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association Saturday in Waco.

Rodriguez added to each of the three events from her regional total to reach 890 pounds in the 148 class.

She had a squat of 380 pounds, bench press of 185 pounds and dead lift of 325 pounds. She added 10 pounds to her bench press and five pounds each to the others.

She finished just five pounds behind fifth place. The event was won with 1,025 pounds.

Rodriguez also made first-team academic all-state and was one of 30 lifters to earn the THSWPA merit scholarship.
