The Kaufman County courthouse annex on the square in Kaufman will be closed for renovation and asbestos removal from Monday, March 27 through Friday, April 7 and reopening on Monday, April 10.
In order to replace carpet in the annex, asbestos must be removed from the building, requiring it to be closed. The asbestos is contained in the mastic used to attach floor tiles under the existing carpet and is not dangerous unless disturbed.
Removal requires a special hazardous materials contract under strict guidelines.
The tax assessor-collector’s offices will be relocated to the other three subcourthouses at 408 E. College St. in Terrell, 201 E. Main St.in Forney and 103 N. Main St. in Kemp. Services include collection of county property taxes and vehicle registrations.
The county treasurer’s office, purchasing agent office, human resources department and auditor’s office will relocate to the emergency operations center at 2125 S. Houston St. in Kaufman.
The collections department, for the payment of court fines and fees, will move to the main courthouse.
The veteran’s services office and the indigent health office will be at 205 S. Jackson St. just south of the square.
Commissioners also have plans to expand the meeting room on the first floor of the annex.
